So you are on Instagram and you have spent a little time checking things out. You follow your favorite peeps and look at their feed. Maybe you follow some celebrities or speakers and you notice there seems to be a pattern to their posts. You are not wrong. You are seeing their Instagram grid. Now you wonder, “Should I be using a grid on Instagram?”. Let’s chat about Instagram & grids.
In case you don’t already know, Instagram (IG) is a very visual social media platform. In general, people come IG to see pictures of pretty things. Most businesses who have a presence on instagram have very appealing graphics on their instagram pages for exactly that reason. Photos, graphics and images are the cornerstone of Instagram. Knowing that people are coming to your instagram essentially to be visually entertained can certainly make you wonder what you can do to up your game.
What is an Instagram Grid?
An Instagram grid is a pattern that you preplan and follow when posting your images on IG. There is no right or wrong way to create an instagram grid, but a little preplanning is usually required. Grids can be anything from a simple 2-type post repeat, which creates a checkerboard effect, to complex visual grids. Often an Instagram user will use a grid for a select amount of time and then change up their grid for a fresh look. Here are a few simple instagram grid examples:
Grid Pros and Cons
There are a few things to consider when you are thinking of implementing an Instagram grid. I have done it both ways and generally I opt out of a grid. Here are the pros and cons as I see it:
*Keeps you consistent
*Makes your feed look professional
*Takes time to create
*Removes the ability to be spontaneous
Honestly the focus on time is my hang up, but making to time to plan a grid is the absolute best option of consistency. Clearly the pros outweigh the cons so maybe I should get myself in gear and get back on the IG Grid train. Couple a great grid with great hashtags and you have a winning combination.
So … To Grid or Not To Grid?
Either way you choose won’t be wrong. Some people like to focus on IG and grids are GREAT. Some will focus on other social media platforms and choose to go without a grid which is totally OK too.
